Our dear friend, mentor and colleague Georgianna McBurney, of Malibu, California, suffered a stroke yesterday morning and is in hospital in Santa Monica in intensive care. In her doctor's words she has a very large "cranial bleed" which they are trying to control. Dear Milan and Linda, I was in the North Shore Religious House when Georgianna and her husband were guardians. We met in their house many times. Dear Colleagues on the Way, Thank you for all these marvellous stories about our beloved Georgianna. We are hoping for calm and gentle days for Georgianna. I remember so well being invited out to the Mc Burney household, and experiencing such bonhomie and fun and laughter there! One time George invited Jim and me into his downtown office, and very proudly showed us a new form of communication- the Fax- he was so proud that a Facsimile he was sending to New York took 7 minutes to arrive there! Those were the days! We hope that y'all enjoy the Summer and keep on journeying on, journey on. Georgianna, we are all thinking of you and pulling for your recovery. I remember when you were putting your heart and soul into the Town Meeting Campaign. I walked by your table (desk, cubicle, or whatever) when you were knee deep in Reports that had come back from Town Meetings, and your were trying to figure out how to file these so that the wisdom could be made available later. You were working on archives before most of us knew what the word meant. That determination has served you and the rest of us well. Our best to you. I met Georgianna in Chicago. As a new arrival, "fresh off the boat" (actually airplane) from the Philippines, she scared me and intimidated me. I even tried avoiding her. One day, working with Judy Weigle, Georgianna came to our GRA cubicle, welcomed me and gave me a big hug. Whatever fear or intimidation I had melted away. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. One time George invited Jim and me into his downtown office, and very proudly showed us a new form of communication- the Fax- he was so proud that a Facsimile he was sending to New York took 7 minutes to arrive there! Those were the days!

Another story about Georgianna - In the early 1980s Georgianna McBurney and Kitty Cole designed and led a program called “Standing Tall in the ‘80s”. The two of them visited local community leaders in each of Chicago’s 77 communities and offered to have the ICA facilitate a Town Meeting, Women’s Forum or Youth Forum. Some of their footprints can be tracked in the Archives because there is a file drawer with folders of each of the 77 communities holding a program document and contact names of those they visited. Georgianna and Kitty’s teamwork and resulting impact on local communities and organizations across Chicago has been an inspiration to the ICA’s Accelerate 77 program.
