Traveling in Europe one is aware how flagrantly wasteful we in the u.s. are. Profligate is another word that applies. And how our individualistic over emphasis prohibits the kind of constraints Europeans accept in recognition of the common good. Americans would never accept the restrictions on their freedoms that here they do. How shall we ever build a communal consciousness? Zoe, I think we all what you named a contradiction. I don’t think it will happen from the top down, but with the empowerment of the local. It won’t happen with a “big event”, but such a thing can temporarily lead to a felling of being in it together, ala 9/11. I certainly don’t think the impact of global environmental change which I feel will cause division at levels above the local. We saw a taste of in TM’s but that was an experiment. The grid should tell us how to do this. Thanks! Jack

Individualism, consumerism and materialism are the three legs of a perverse, “Gordon Gecko” form of capitalism that has infected American culture. I’ve heard some suggest this as the reason the U.S Ryder Cup golf team has lately not performed well against the Europeans. Aversion to teams. It may also be the reason socialism is a 4-letter word in the U.S. Randy

Randy, I think consumerism and materialism are closely linked and are “one leg”. Individualism would be the Cultural contradiction and Nationalism would be the Political third leg of the stool. Maybe?? Jack
