Tillich's students might join #MeToo, if any survive
Thanks for the article, Jann. Many heroes come to mind, e.g., John F. Kennedy. Surprised about Tillich in the article you sent: https://feminismandreligion.com/2017/11/17/does-the-sexual-misconduct-of-the... When we get down to who is without sin, I only think of Jesus, and have even wondered about his deep companionship with women in the New Testament—a movie I can’t recall played on this question. Could he have been the son of Abba if he had “made love”? Doubt if we’ll ever know, though he did wrestle mightily as a human being throughout his life. John P.S. This bit at the end about the author is interesting: Cynthia Garrity-Bond, feminist theologian and social ethicist, is completing her doctorate from Claremont Graduate University in women studies in religion, with a secondary focus in theology, ethics and culture. Her research interest includes feminist sexual theology, transnational feminism, animal theology/welfare, women and incarceration, historical theology with particular emphasis on religious movements of women, agency and resistance to ecclesial authority, embodiment and Mariology. This is good, Jann, and thanks for posting it. It reads like a re-working of the Donatist controversy in the early church. As quick Google reminder said, "*Donatists *argued that Christian clergy must be faultless for their ministry to be effective and their prayers and sacraments to be valid." This perspective was declared a heresy and died out around 411 AD, but still appears from time to time. Clergy and theologians, like everyone else are forgiven sinners! As we said in the Daily Office, "We are free to live, for we are a forgiven people." That's not an excuse for manifest mis-deeds but a mandate to "go and sin no more." John’s question is important. “Could he have been the son of Abba if he had “made love”?” My question is “Could he have been the son of Abba if he had not “made love”?” How would that stack up with all of those who claim Jesus was fully human? What in heaven’s name does “fully” mean in this context?
