Some reflections from Shadow Rock Church -- one of the founders was interviewed recently
Our Covenant: We covenant one with another to be that sensitive and responsive part of human society which perceives and responds to God’s newest thrust in the midst of history. The uniqueness and greatness of every life is radically affirmed. Our task together demands a comprehensive view of life, always pointed intentionally to the future. Our life together involves us individually and corporately in study and worship, always maintaining a proper balance between proclamation of the Word about life with the deeds which make life good. Those activities which eliminate age barriers, cut across religious dogma, reduce cultural parochialisms, and engage secular people with life’s ultimate possibilities will be worthy of our best efforts. Thanks Jim, if I were to go back to the institutional church that is the kind of group I would be a part of. And it being a part of my old denomination struck me. My second choice would be Redlands UCC, in our town, which has not quite the intentional history but close. But I am in the bleachers cheering them on and doing my best to stay grounded in the Way Life Is. MM Sent from my iPad

I watched the video. Very good, but I take it this is the new pastor. His comment about “as long as the action doesn’t break the law” really hit me. What does he say about the sit-ins of the civil rights movement? How would he explain Bonhoeffer’s decision to kill Hitler? What makes the law (he says of the establishment) make breaking it a taboo? I wish she would have given back the image of the Trans-establishment. Gene Marshall has a wonderful diagram and statement on that. I worry about the future for that church. Jack

I’m not acquainted with Jack, but think you are mishearing what the pastor is saying, which leads to what seems like you are questioning him. I am quite certain what his response would be to your questions (since I do know him), but you can ask him yourself through ShadowRock web site. He would not take offense. BTW, ShadowRock has been a sanctuary church for several years and Ken and others go down to ICE offices monthly for a gathering to let them know they are being “watched.” Ken has been pastor for, I believe, 11 years now. I share Jim’s concerns for existential Christianity. I trust the existential will always find a way. May someone in his eighties retell the story of the church coming out of the last 25 years of biblical research. I First two centuries: Jesus movement struggles in its empire context to define the Kingdom as an alternative. II Constantine buys rights to “Christianity” and institutionalizes it to legitimize empire. III Church today again struggles to return to becoming a movement in midst of a global empire that now threatens the viability of the whole planet.

Jack, In defense of that video and that comment it most likely was a tongue in cheek remark, because they have been a Sanctuary church for some time, doing bold ministries to immigrants in spite of the law. I’m not worried about that church at all. They are a church that I also would be very proud to be part of. Their leadership is well grounded in Bonhoeffer and RS-I from their earliest beginnings and have worked with the Profound Journey Dialogue and with Gene Marshall to help newer members understand the concepts. 3 things going well with the Union--I got a sense of the people of this nation at work -- not simply jobs but that there is an amazing amount of forward energy being expended across this land--far more than I ever generally hear about--Lots of big issues are surfacing many long standing that need attention -- boring stuff like infrastructure, stuff we are paralyzed on like immigration--New leadership -- a lot of us old people are still sort of in charge, at the same time, there are many younger folks stepping up 3 things not going well, need improvement--We seem totally consumed by tv, social media, internet to the degree that we can hardly focus on any substance, so distracted by our unskilled use of visual and instant media. The professionals seem more stuck in this than anyone--Slogans -- still get a big response, but "socialism/freedom" or "white privilege/racism" or the many other either or slogans seem patently unhelpful Mothers rights/infant/fetus rights -- I just don't see how that is going to be worked out--an absolute addiction to anything contentious and conflictual -- just vacuums up our consciousness and attention -- for extra credit:Your 5 point plan (ha ha) Jim Wiegel “That which consumes me is not man, nor the earth, nor the heavens, but the flame which consumes man, earth, and sky." 3 things going well: * political engagement--In many ways young people and people of color are engaged in registering to vote and in voting (and older white women, in particular, are out there block walking, registering voters) * an appreciation of the arts--creativity is flourishing, somewhat (i.e., a golden era of television/film) * an awareness among many of the dire consequences of not taking care of the environment. This has brought about efforts to recycle, increase sustainability efforts, and efforts to conserve. * (one more) among the young, especially, a tolerance and appreciation of other cultures and the LGBTQ community in ways that are new. Not going well: * living wages. Our town has a poverty rate of 37%. Affordable housing * public education funding and support * public transportation, traffic gridlock, challenges for pedestrian spaces * race relations (in spite of the last bullet above), tolerance 5 point plan--show up!
