Second picture was a group photo of the bund (earthen dam) we built as the (second or third) HDTS in Maliwada. Ed Shinn was the moving force toward using the HDTS workdays for a significant project. It was to be a “percolation” dam, collecting rain runoff and letting it percolate into the water table. The days were hot and the sun unbearable. We would go in the early morning and work — gathering and throwing rocks, gravel, sand, dirt — there was a shaded spot nearby where we went for lunch and a rest at the hottest part of the day, continuing on in the afternoon. At the completion, we had an evening procession out to the finished bund and a candlelight ceremony that included a reading from Kazantzakis. Very hard work.
