Many years ago Ron (Griffith) and I visited David and Lin at the Reese Homestead in the Loess Hills of Iowa.Ron was from Iowa and we were on a trip with his sister JoAnn who had terminal brain cancer and was in the last weeks of her life.It was a magical stop on our journey. Lin spent time with JoAnn and Ron and I walked the land with David and listened to the story of the homestead. David played the piano and sang. Lin invited a friend over because she thought JoAnn would enjoy her company. It turned out JoAnn and Lin's friend actually had a close connection which I no longer recall. JoAnn loved it! We stayed overnight in the old farm house and were wonderfully cared for. It was a memorable visit.David was so at home on the land. I can still see him in my mind's eye balancing on a hill with his arms out talking about preserving the land. I thought often of Jo (Nelson) while there and her connections to the "place".Blessings,Beret_______________________________________________On Thu, Jul 2, 2020 at 5:41 AM isobeljimbish--- via OE <oe@lists.wedgeblade.net> wrote:Thank you Judy, we miss David._______________________________________________Isobel BishopSent from my iPhoneWe first met David and sometimes Lin in Schenectady, New York in the late 60's and early 70's. He would come over from the Regional House in Rochester and address our lives, gently and thoughtfully helping to turn our RSI's into a lifetime commitment. When our son Dave spent his year abroad in Kenya we were grateful that the Zahrts helped make his time in the villages safe and meaningful. The family homestead wayside inn they ran in Iowa hosted us on several occasions and we hosted David in Michigan City, Indiana on his last cross country pilgrimage with the Climate Change March. The Presbyterian Church that we attended hosted many marchers and have continued to be active in Climate Change Awareness and Action.David has been a sign of commitment and possibility in our lives. May he rest in peace and may his family find comfort and blessings as they remember his amazing life.Grace and Peace, Judy LindbladOn Wed, Jul 1, 2020 at 4:09 PM Lynda C via Dialogue <dialogue@lists.wedgeblade.net> wrote:_______________________________________________Lin and Heidi and Jo, Karen, Jean and families,
John and I send our sympathy to you along with celebrating a life rich in service and song. David’s beautiful voice as part of the Barber Shop Quartet and caberets will long be remembered. We also give thanks for his leadership during the Local Church Experiment.
I recall the wonder of meeting several family members (I’m hoping I have their names correct) that he brought into the movement events and seeing the family Homeplace in the Nature Conservancy magazine.
David’s dedication to being part of the climate change movement in a dramatic way…a cross country march, no less…was a momentous decision for a senior citizen. What a demonstration of passionate care as long as one has breath!
Well done, thy good and faithful servant! Rest in peace,
Lynda andJohn Cock.

David came through Phoenix on that cross-country bike ride as well. What a handsome man! And caring--my oh my!

I first met David in 1970, lived and worked with him in Nairobi during the 80s, and most recently was inspired by his participation in a coast-to-coast march to highlight the urgency of climate change in 2015. When the marchers arrived in Chicago in September, their route went through the heart of Fifth City on Jackson Boulevard as they proceeded to the GreenRise Building in Uptown where the 50 or so marchers had dinner and spent the night. As David rode his bike past the Iron Man statue on Jackson, a group of Fifth Citizens and ICA "veterans" stopped with him to take a photo (see attached). David, of course, is the man at the left with a white beard. It's one of my favorite memories with David.
