Lake Karachay,
known to be the most polluted lake on
the planet, lies south of Siberia and
east of the Ural Mountains in Russia. Used as a
reservoir for nuclear waste from the Mayak
atomic weapons complex, its toxic waters are now
mostly covered in concrete. Scientist who
visited Lake Karachay in 1990 measured the
radiation on the shore and the needles of their
