Last Month of New Releases!
|
|
|
|
We can’t believe the final month of UNLADYLIKE2020's new releases is here! But have no fear! You can still access all the UNLADYLIKE2020 digital shorts on PBS’
American Masters, and on our
interactive website - as well as the educational resources for each of our 26 trailblazers tailor-made for learning-from-home. We're excited to share the final 4 with you, releasing every Wednesday until
August 26, in honor of Women's Equality Day, the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote being signed into law.

As journalists and storytellers, it's especially meaningful for us to share today's short film on
Jovita Idar, a bold Latina journalist and women’s rights and civil rights activist. The film includes important and little-known Mexican American history, and features award-winning journalist
Maria Hinojosa, anchor of NPR’s
Latino USA. Watch the film
here!
Next week’s film will feature
Jeannette Rankin, the first woman member of the U.S. Congress and a passionate suffragist and peace activist. The film also spotlights
Congresswoman Deb Haaland, one of the first two American Indian women elected to Congress, who reflects on the state of women in national politics today, as well as the challenges American Indians
have faced fighting for citizenship and voting rights throughout American history.
|
|
|
|
Our last two films will tell the inspiring stories of American Indian composer, author and civil rights activist
Zitkála-Šá/Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (releasing
August 19), interviewing modern-day counterpart and Standing Rock Sioux historian,
LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, and of newspaper editor, civil rights crusader, and the first African American woman Vice Presidential candidate
Charlotta Spears Bass (releasing
August 26), featuring Pulitzer Prize winning reporter for
The New York Times Magazine,
Nikole Hannah-Jones.

Behind the Scenes:
What Does "Unladylike" Mean to You?
|
|
|
|
In an interview with Good Morning America released today, UNLADYLIKE2020 co-host Julianna Margulies admitted that she has
always been a little unladylike, inspired by her grandmother, who graduated from the NYU School of Law in 1924, and more recently, by all the women profiled in the series. Margulies said that for her "unladylike" means being powerful, adding, "the more educated
you are in the history of the women's struggle, whether you're a woman or a man, the more peaceful our coexistence is going to be together."
Here's the full interview.

We interviewed over 60 women, leaders in diverse professions, including activist, educator and writer Brittany Packnett Cunningham, pictured here. Check out this 2-minute compilation video of
what they said when we asked, "What does 'unladylike' mean to you?" here!

HELP US REACH THE FINISH LINE
|
|
|
|
Our dedicated team has been working around the clock to create innovative short films to change the narrative of American history and highlight the role of women, and especially
women of color, in shaping it. We have also been working with WNET Kids Media & Education to create free, accessible and engaging educational resources and curriculum that highlight the accomplishments and challenges of each of our heroines. The Unladylike2020
collection of lesson plans are available on
PBS LearningMedia.
You can be an active supporter of these stories of extraordinary perseverance, grit, and vision. We still need your support to help us close a fundraising gap of $50K, which
will allow us to expand the information and educational resources available on our interactive website, including the stories of over 200 unsung women our team has diligently researched.
We are so grateful to everyone who has contributed to the project.
A contribution of any amount will make a big difference to help us reach the finish line. Thank you!
