In this 1997 book by James J. Farrel, it says that Students for a Democratic Society was inspired by conversations that took place after Joe Mathews performed the wedding of Tom Hayden and Sandra 'Casey' Cason, a SNCC worker who came to New Left politics via the Christian Faith and Life Community.

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to share a link to Standins, a documentary that I encountered at a local screening at our public library. http://peopleshistoryintexas.org/standins/

Standins features interviews with people who participated in unusual demonstrations around University of Texas in 1960, aimed at integrating two movie theatres near the campus. The Faith and Life Community (and Joe Mathews) are mentioned in the interviews.

The film was made by Richard Croxdale (rcroxdal@austincc.edu) and his partner, Glenn Scott (glenns1048@yahoo.com), who is female. I spoke with Richard after I saw the documentary, and wrote to him with links to the ICA archives. He wrote back: Thanks.  I always wondered what happened.  They seemed to disappear from the Austin scene by the time of anti-war activities.  Fascinating journey.  Someone should do the documentary.  Not me.  Not us.  We stay in Texas, pretty much. But someone could create a nice little doc with that material. (the ICA archive material)

The documentary provides a glimpse into the Faith and Life Community prior to the move to Chicago.

We showed the film to the Holcombe's, Henry's, Hampton's, Adkinson's, and Singleton's Saturday night.

Hope you enjoy.

All the best,
Diann McCabe, San Marcos, TX

ICA GLOBAL ARCHIVES - SAVE THE DATES

2016 SPRING SOJOURN
Monday March 28 through Sunday April 3, 2016

The Fall 2015 Sojourn broke new ground in participation and advancement of ICA’s Global Archives and in continuing and sustaining ICA’s missional work. Over 35 folks participated on site and another 15 participated virtually.
Our intent for Spring Sojourn 2016 is to reassess ICA Global Archive strategy and to raise the questions of:
  • What is the mission of the archives?
  • What structure and funding is needed to carry out the mission?
  • Who will constitute the Archives Advisory Council?
  • Connecting with other ICA archives around the world.
  • Developing the focus for the Archives Sojourn, Fall 2016 and beyond.
  • Connecting Research Institutions to our Digital (and paper) Archives.
  • Developing the focus for the Archives Sojourn, Fall 2016 and beyond.

We will be seeking input for the work of the Spring Sojourn so heads up when we send information your way.

In addition, it is expected that work begun in the fall of 2015 will continue.
  • Recasting the New Religious Mode
  • Amending, revisiting and advancing Training Inc. with significant additions to our collection, with on-going work continuing to develop this key project
  • Preparing documents for the Historic Role of the ICA Building project for the application for inclusion on the nation’s Registry of Historic Places
