Last week was a time for major events in Chicago connected with ICA's 50th Anniversary. One was more external while the other was more internal. On Saturday, September 15, ICA-USA was the organizing sponsor for the "Accelerate 77" Share Fair. This event has dramatically re-positioned us for the sake of expanding our national programs. Several colleagues from across the country were present. If you would like to see some photos and video, click on the following link: http://ica.site-ym.com/news/news.asp?id=103496 Two days before, we had an unveiling of the an art piece which will serve hang at 4750 for the next 50 years. The artist, Gina Alicea, named the completed piece "Ocean of Devotion." You can view her description about the work on the following link: * * http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/25387580 The work consists of more than a thousand pieces of cloth. On each appears written information that originated from one of three sources. First, about 350 pieces name deceased staff members and colleagues who worked at one time or another with EI/OE/ICA during the past 50 years. Others identify important past programs and projects --- RS-1, the Academy, and 24 Human Development Projects, etc. Second, several pieces highlight current programs and supporters, e.g., Technology of Participation (ToP), Accelerate 77 and its advisory committee, names of donors, etc. Third, 600+ pieces were created during fifty events that occurred across the country and around the world to mark the 50th Anniversary. Participants at these events wrote statements on strips of cloth to express their hopes and dreams, or, as we like to say, "claim a promise," for the next fifty years. The piece therefore includes symbolism of ICA's past, present, and future. It has been a full week. I am particularly grateful that Carol Pierce joined us at the Share Fair and celebrated our 50th Anniversary just a few days before she passed. Terry Bergdall

Dear colleagues of ICA India We want to wish you a great gathering on Tuesday, 2 October, to mark the 50th. So many personal memories and experiences are with us every day, of all our time and work with ICA India over 43 years. Just to mention a few: * Helping facilitate the ITI in Bombay in 1972 on our way to the Isle of Dogs, England - then being assigned to stay in India instead - 5 years later we were still there - with a baby adopted daughter, Kiran!! * The Daily Office, meetings, workshops, gatherings etc in Sankli Street, Byculla, with Dolly Mannen, Wainrights, Spencer, Voslers, Barkers, Shamraos, Dharma to mention a few. * The long and adventuresome train treks across India by 3rd Class train sleeping in the luggage rack or on the floor * Working in Delhi with the Powells * Opening the Hyderabad House with Josephs and Granny, Francis, Caswell, Holmes families, Dharmalingham, Balms, George Chellapa and Olive Strettle . * The Global Language School! * The ITIs in Mumbai, Calcutta and Hyderabad * Shovelling dirt to transform the latrine and rubbish area of the community in the Gunfoundry project * In Pune, over the last 20 years, on quite a number of shorter sojourns, working along side the Indian families, and just being there through the very difficult time leading up to Shakuntala's death * The training programs in the Talegaon Environmental Traning Centre and the regional gatherings of ICA colleagues from India, Bangladesh and Nepal in more recent years. * Just last March 2012, as part of Kiran's wedding celebrations, visiting Hyderabad with ALL 10 of the Harry and Iris Francis children and grandchildren - and going on an evening tour of the Gunfoundry area!!! We wish you all a most memorable celebration and look forward to reports and photos from our second home! Burna Dunn and I have deep gratitude for the year we spend in India—our first assignment overseas—working with Mary and Cyprian D'Souza and colleagues in the Calcutta House, surrounded by the explosion of Nava Gram Prayas. We celebrate this anniversary, India's greatness, the new nation that is coming into being, and all of the creations of the ICA in India. Indeed, a huge thanks for the vision and the leadership, the skill and passion that brought us together from wherever we are, to this fine celebration. The technology of virtual participation was a real gift. I really enjoyed the Oceans of Devotion presentation. Later, I discovered the presentation of the fabric strips to the artist (in May or June) which helped me to visualize the project even more as I saw the strips and the context more closely.
