Searching for a paper
For whatever reason, I am being pushed to reconsider the other world. I found a paper by Tillich (see attached) and I remember a paper, I believe by Niebuhr called "We live in 2 worlds" or something that we studied. Anyone recall?? Have a copy?? I checked the Global Research Network website and also the online data base and was unable to find it. Of course, now that I am 78, I have to wonder . .. did it actually exist? Thanks for any help. And, how are you all doing?? Over the past 6 weeks, I have been much reminded of one of the Old Testament readings from the daily office in RS-1 Amos 5:18-24. We fled from the heat in Arizona (114 avg in July) to Colorado and a tornado met us. We returned to Arizona and Hurricane Hillary just missed us. We went to a niece's wedding in Oregon and the venue was changed due to a wildfire evacuation order. Now we are back in Arizona, but a brother- and sister-in-law are stuck at an airport in Charlotte because of Hurricane Idalia . . . Jim Wiegel Theunknown is what is. I believe I saw a paper - in the midst of the 1971-1973 sort - called “We Live in Two Worlds”. If I see it again, I will send it to you. Your paragraph on climate change was overwhelming. That is the state I feel these days. Likely one of the 144 states of being. Peace, Karen

Looking forward to your thoughts on this, Jim and others. What I find wonderful about the OE’s writing on the Other World is that it states that the Other World is found in This World. It is not separate from the mundane experience of the human animal. The Other World is rather a shift in awareness that occurs in the here and the now. We state that the Other World breaks into This World. This is a poetic way of saying that during an ordinary experience, a human being’s awareness suddenly shifts and expands with new insight, new language, and new emotion. There is no duality. It is a shift in consciousness. Thanks, Rob, yes, part of mundane experience. I have been participating with a study group that Herman Greene set up, focussed on "Regenerative Economics" -- what will be involved in translating how we, as humans (and all our organizational offspring), operate on the planet so as to be somehow in line with the limits we face. Anyway, this morning, one of the other participants shared a page of reflections that seemed very much to be his attempt to articulate "the other world in the midst of this world" these days . . . Hello! When Blase and I were recently in Litibu, I was asked by Josh Craver what I thought were some of the key legacies of the ICA/EI, One of my comments was the Other World Work we did. We dug out an early copy of the Courage to Lead and explored the various dynamics of the OW. It was an enlivening conversation! And yes, we saw some of the early papers in the archives. I am now back from travels and hope to check in with the material again. A key questions is how does this apply to shifting the consciousness to a planetary perspective. Hi Jan, Recently the Centering Prayer group I belong to has been delving into World Without End, (first published in 2017) the text of conversations between film maker and writer Lucette Verboten and Father Thomas Keating. In the course of their exchange, Keating reveals the profound influence the evolutionary theology of Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin had upon his greatly expanded idea of God, the universe and humanity moving into higher stages of consciousness beyond the “rational level.” JWM spoke often about consciousness of consciousness of consciousness. I believe our work with the OW in the midst of TW had much to do with this, though truth be, I was too naive at that point to fully understand the relationship. Certainly this all applies to shifting consciousness to a planetary perspective —the union with everything, letting go of the particular controversies, “in order to be no thing.” \ Jon and Maureen Jenkins did the most depth work on the OW. You might find a chat with Maureen fruitful. Marilyn

James, Thank you as ever for this, (and many others) collegium.
A key questions is how does this apply to shifting the consciousness to a planetary perspective. Jan
Paraphrasing from Maria Popova’s Maginalian, https://www.themarginalian.org/, if an ant hill could be used as an analogy for all of humanity, where murder and music get equal billing, where there are differing roles but no hierarchy, the workers have encounters that spread through the hill and influence its behaviour. (I could say that each of us is the access to a hologram of the entire cosmos.) My partner, Mary Farrar (83) and I (81) have an at-wake-up, a joint solitary commencing with at least 20 minutes of silence. These days, we have done that on my front porch on the main street of a small village, when nothing is stirring except the call of loons and a rooster crowing. Next, we exchange our state of being and a gratitude. I got this process from Joyce Marshall many years ago. With the utterance of our our 'State of Being’ we then try to locate it in the Other World charts - the Jenkins edition that I got from David Dunn a year ago. This simple practice keeps our partnership in the lively present moment, honouring our 'two-ness’. We can safely be at ‘opposite ends’. This assertion of consciousness of consciousness, intentionally affects everything we are, together and with others. Ever grateful for the response of others. Ken

Hi Jan,
Recently the Centering Prayer group I belong to has been delving into World Without End, (first published in 2017) the text of conversations between film maker and writer Lucette Verboten and Father Thomas Keating.

Jan

Now we are back in Arizona, but a brother- and sister-in-law are stuck at an airport in Charlotte because of Hurricane Idalia . . .

The unknown is what is. And to be frightened of it is what sends everybody scurrying around chasing dreams, illusions, wars, peace, love, hate, all that. Unknown is what is. Accept that it's unknown, and it's plain sailing. John Lennon
