Denis and I were there for five days and left on Tuesday to return to Connecticut, knowing we would need to return in a few weeks. While there we could see that Barbara had lost weight and had become much weaker. We arranged for hospice services to be provided to supplement the care she was already receiving. Yesterday morning she dressed and went to breakfast, but she ate almost nothing and went back to her room to lie down. When her nurse Bob went to wake her for lunch, around 12:15 p.m., he found no pulse. He used his stethoscope and could hear a faint heartbeat, then after a minute or so, he heard nothing. We are grateful that Barbara died peacefully and without pain. She is safely home. Denis and I will return to Indiana late on June 12. Pastor Sam Johnson, the chaplain at Robin Run who Barbara loved so much, will lead a memorial service in the chapel at Robin Run on June 14 at 2:00 p.m. Barbara donated her body to Indiana University Medical School as Bill had done. We will have another memorial service in Connecticut for the family here in a few weeks. We had a good visit with Barbara when we were there. We went out for walks once or twice each day. She was happy to be out in the good weather and to see the trees, flowers and birds. Twice we sat in that nearby gazebo and just sang songs. Would you let Margaret Taylor know - I don't have her address or email. Also, I'm not sure how to contact the ICA list serve to let them know. I sent an email to Joaquina Rodriguez this morning. Dear Barbara, She took me under her wing when we arrived in 5th city. She gave me a nick name (the only one I have ever really had). She sat at the top of the stairs on the West Side when you came in the Trumbull entrance. Some how she always had collating for me to do after school. "How many Bonhoeffer papers can you put together in 30 minutes?" she would say. Sometimes there were deep conversations and sometimes snacks, but always Barbara. That is almost 50 years ago. Barb and we (Doris and Charles) arrived at the Institute in the summer of 1964, and we last visited her shortly before Bill's death when she was in a nursing home in Indianapolis. Barb was bright; she was tenacious; she was a life-long student--she received her Master's Degree when she was in her 70's or thereabouts. She had some tough assignments around the world, and she was obedient to those assignments. She loved the Order, and she embraced our mission. Our appreciation and our gratitude go with you, Barb. We are saddened by this news. We'll always remember Bill and Barbara in Hai Ou at the start of that project. They brought humor and grace wherever they went. Barbara was a smart, strong and gracious woman. I never worked closely with her, but my single strongest memory is of being paired with Barbara to dance the whirling dervish at a council in Bilbao, Spain. We were about the same height, so one of us stood ready to catch the other who was "whirling" in case dizziness set in. She went through the whole dance with a sort of bemused smile, but I knew she wouldn't let me fall. We celebrate her complete life. Barb and we (Doris and Charles) arrived at the Institute in the summer of 1964, and we last visited her shortly before Bill's death when she was in a nursing home in Indianapolis. Barb was bright; she was tenacious; she was a life-long student--she received her Master's Degree when she was in her 70's or thereabouts. She had some tough assignments around the world, and she was obedient to those assignments. She loved the Order, and she embraced our mission. Our appreciation and our gratitude go with you, Barb.

Denis and I were there for five days and left on Tuesday to return to Connecticut, knowing we would need to return in a few weeks. While there we could see that Barbara had lost weight and had become much weaker. We arranged for hospice services to be provided to supplement the care she was already receiving. Yesterday morning she dressed and went to breakfast, but she ate almost nothing and went back to her room to lie down. When her nurse Bob went to wake her for lunch, around 12:15 p.m., he found no pulse. He used his stethoscope and could hear a faint heartbeat, then after a minute or so, he heard nothing. We are grateful that Barbara died peacefully and without pain. She is safely home. Denis and I will return to Indiana late on June 12. Pastor Sam Johnson, the chaplain at Robin Run who Barbara loved so much, will lead a memorial service in the chapel at Robin Run on June 14 at 2:00 p.m. Barbara donated her body to Indiana University Medical School as Bill had done. We will have another memorial service in Connecticut for the family here in a few weeks. We had a good visit with Barbara when we were there. We went out for walks once or twice each day. She was happy to be out in the good weather and to see the trees, flowers and birds. Twice we sat in that nearby gazebo and just sang songs. In the last 4 years, Barbara and Bill came to spend weekends with Carol Pierce. I would come home from work and find them at Carol's telling stories, remembering their assignments together and laughing and laughing. One of the best stories was about when the Pierces and the Alerdings were assigned to start a religious house in Australia. JWM went with them and they had many meetings with the clergy families there. After a few weeks, Joe prepared to leave. At the airport, someone said, "But where will we live and how will we support ourselves?" And Joe said, "I am sure one of those great clergy families will be pleased to share their manse with you all to be the religious house". And Bill and Barbara and Carol would laugh and laugh. What a legacy of courage and capability we are privileged to be a part of. God's peace to Barbara and all the saints. I remember Barb from the January 1970 Academy where she delightfully irritated me into throwing my file folder across the room at her. And she then had the nerve to just laugh at me. Such passion have I seldom seen in someone who was not absolutely angry. She knew exactly what I needed and I am very grateful for that event and for knowing her.
