Here is something I wrote a few yeasrs ago on being an active elder. It is in my book A Compassionate Civilization: Elder as Prophet My dad used to say, “Son, don’t get old, it isn’t any fun.” And I would say, “But, Dad, what’s the alternative—to die young?” If we are given the gift of old age, what can we do with it? I believe that the elder can be a prophet calling people to prepare for what is coming. Whether or not we had a career or a family, as we move into our elder years, we can be a voice of truth bringing a sense of urgency into the present. We don’t have to worry about what others think of us. We can live utterly on behalf of the coming generations of life on Earth. We can call people to pay attention to the juggernauts of history rolling down on us. Prepare ye the way for climate chaos! It’s coming, for sure. Stop using fossil fuels now. Move away from bodies of water. Get a storm shelter. Grow your own food. Live near your extended family and friends for mutual support. The elder as prophet can take risks a person with family and work responsibilities cannot so easily take. The elder can participate in nonviolent demonstrations. The elder can write frank Op-Eds to the local paper and sign every relevant petition. The elder can speak out at community meetings. The elder can donate to important causes. The elder can speak at schools to awaken the young. The elder can help get out the vote and volunteer at the voting site. The elder can maintain a healthy body and mind so that he or she can continue to serve others. The elder can volunteer at the local food bank or soup kitchen. The elder can give courage to younger people. The elder can show others how to be a human being who is aging self-consciously in gratitude for life itself. The elder can learn and do something new every day. The elder can be “fierce with age” without apology. The elder can be gracious and yet firm, patient and yet impatient. The elder can invite people to wake up and live life with authenticity and passion. The elder can be active on social media, bringing critical news to the attention of others. The elder can honor death and celebrate the passing of friends, foes, and the homeless. The elder can show others how to die with dignity and trust. The elder can show others how to live with love and laughter. The elder can show others how to be honest and inquisitive about sickness and old age. The elder can be a wonderful grandparent and great-grandparent. The elder can be a sacred sign of living life fully to the last breath. The elder can call people to dream about the coming civilization of compassion and to work for its realization. Yes! Your earlier post about the scope of the "movement of movements" is quite helpful in imaging what is going on. I think what Bill Parker is wrestling with is how to catalyze something more across these fronts -- his intuition is to find a way to connect them across their various missions and campaigns with a. some personal contact, b. some focus on more local geography, and c. some experiential sense of the human suffering of folks in their communities -- particularly the awesome sense of isolation/aloneness so present in our world -- who do I talk to? I am thinking that the "movement of movements" needs somehow to be expanded to include the movements who are fighting more to keep things as they are -- I don't really know -- my neighbor took down the trump flag he had hoisted below the US flag . . . and replaced it with a confederate flag. Hmm Jim Wiegel Theunknown is what is. And to be frightened of it is what sends everybodyscurrying around chasing dreams, illusions, wars, peace, love, hate, allthat. Unknown is what is. Great. Let me know how that goes. With all due respect to Rob, I've grown impatient with the at least 20+ years of aspirational hope under the network of networks and movement of movement banners. I've been looking into the Cynefin framework (see: https://thecynefin.co/) and particularly the EU fieldbook developed in collaboration with Cynefin on managing complexity (and chaos) in times of crisis (https://op.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/712438d0-8c55-11eb-...). The one thing I have learned is that the key breakthroughs emerge from the margins, the gaps. the neglected corners and not the usual suspects. Hope to reconnect more in the future.... Rob, I completely respect the work you have been doing and the profound contributions you are making to personal and collective healing. I refocused on the hyper-local after years of observing and participating in network of network and movement of movement efforts, from the Pachamama Alliance “Awakening the Dreamer” training in 2005 to the Wiser Earth online platform based on Paul Hawkins “Blessed Unrest” vision of networking individuals, organizations and efforts around the world. It became intermittently fulfilling and overall exhausting. I’m still clarifying my learnings from these and related experiences, but I’ve found a greater sense of hope and progress In realizing that the Beloved Community, like the Kingdom of Heaven, is ”here now and coming in power,” and that instead of trying to interweave wildly diverse ideologies and commitments to specific issues or even “shared interests,” there are individuals and families who are already giving presence to the Beloved Community; we have both directly witnessed them everywhere we care to look, for they have out-sized impact beyond specific issues or causes and elicit expanding circles of redemption and restorative resolutions in the wholeness of their thinking, organization and action. It is this “presencing” of the Beloved Community that needs to be highlighted, connected and cultivated, for it is happening in the gaps, the margins, the neglected spaces between and often in spite of competing ideologies, values, principles and issues. That’s as far as my thinking has developed. Because today, the channels of communication have created a different environment for discourse, connecting, learning, and sharing beyond our conventional understandings of networking or movement building. That’s all I got right now. I’ve completed my contract with Rainier Beach will be sharing my learnings on LinkedIn and my blog over coming weeks. But this conversation has already helped to bring clarity to my own “blessed unrest.” For however fulfilling or dire the times, we are and will always be “in the midst” of living in the Beloved Community with confidence in its greater realization. -- Ken Gillgren kgillgren@igc.org

Thank you, Rob. For an old guy you are really good! Seems to me weeping is a good response we should do more of. I can remember from time to time tears appearing in my Grandmother's eyes.
When we were living at the ICA centre in Brussels, Robert Gilman came to visit. He was the founder and editor of In Context magazine which became YES! Later. We were talking in our room of all the creative (I called them "alternative" approaches) at large on the planet and how exciting they all were and how much I appreciated In Context for the reporting it was doing of these alternatives.
"No, no," Robert said. "We are not interested in alternatives. We are spelling out and highlighting the NEW MAINSTREAM." "Like Voluntary Simplicity," I said. "More like voluntary complexity" He replied.
In reading your work on MOM, I found myself wanting to edit out "can" and replace the verb with "is" . . .
