We heard the author, Colin Woodard, speak at Chautauqua this summer where he focused on the themes of this book as he addressed the week's theme "American Identity." Looks like a good book. Author Colin Woodard was a speaker at the Chautauqua Institution (on Lake Chautauqua near Jamestown, N.Y.) this summer when Ellie and I were there. Helpful to know those 11 regions especially when engaging in national politics! Kind of an update on The Nine Nations of North America. Thank you for sending this, Jim. I remember reading The Nine Nations of North America after we returned from 2 years on Indonesia. The book had a lasting effect on how I think about North America--and this update is helpful in understanding the divisions and commonalities of this landscape.--Diann McCabe, San Marcos, Texas (on the border of El Norte and Greater Appalachia) ________________________________ From: Dialogue <dialogue-bounces@lists.wedgeblade.net> on behalf of James Wiegel via Dialogue <dialogue@lists.wedgeblade.net> Sent: Saturday, August 4, 2018 5:56 AM To: Colleague Dialogue; Jean Long; Judith Wiegel Cc: James Wiegel Subject: [Dialogue] Remember the nine nations? http://atlanticsentinel.com/2017/07/the-united-republics-a-peace-plan-for-am... I find the 9 Nations of North America as visualized by Joel Garreau, and the language he used, more informative. In 2014 Garreau wrote an article in the NY Times about redrawing the boundaries. https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2014/07/03/where-do-borders-need-to-be... .
