I have known Joe Slicker since I was a child. My earliest are as Joanne and John's dad (Bill was a lot older so I did not hang out with him. India is where our relationship changed and changed me. I was one of Joe's team. A story I have told many times in leadership programs since . My first or second regional gathering I was supposed to select a village for a consult before arriving. I failed so when I showed up at the meeting Joe told me to turn around and not return until I was done. I was embarrassed, angry and felt cut off from serious collegiality, dialogue as well as fun and friends. I returned complete and from that moment determined I would try never to show up unless I completed my tasks. India was trsnsformative for and Joe was a big party that. When I left India in 1980 I was tired and planning to return to Chicago and talk Evelyn Kurihara into marrying me. I arrived in Chicago Joe was in the lobby Larry I need you to come to Kenya and live in a village. I said no. Then I called Evelyn in Nigeria she said her plan was to go to Kenya. I asked if she had talked to Joe. She said no . I knew the universe was aligning with Joe's plan . This seemed to happen a lot. Joe was my mentor and to this day here his voice saying my, my ,my. He will be missed. He was a great strategist. Always trying for the breakthrough assuming even if we failed transformation had better chance On Mar 24, 2016 1:10 AM, "via Dialogue" <dialogue@lists.wedgeblade.net> wrote:

It is hard to imagine being the child of Joe Slicker! What a man! In many ways, he was so tough, but inside there was deep concern and spirit. I remember being in a group called, "Research Centrum" that he led in the early 70's. This was during the time that The Man of La Mancha film was really popular. Our group met at eight o'clock every morning, and yes, every morning, Joe had us sing, "The Man of La Mancha." At first I thought it was rally hokey, but as the quarter progressed, the words and music became more important to everyone. It turned out to be a real spirit exercise, that I think only Joe could have pulled off.
In gratitude for Joe's life, Doris Hahn

I met Joe in early 1967 and it was clear from the start that he was a giant man of the Spirit. The smile, the laugh, the “my-my-my” and the passion of the mission were so embodied that I knew I was honored to be with such a man on the Great March. The one specific story was when I was assigned to the Local Economic Development Team of the 232 Replication Campaign in Maharashtra. It was my assignment was to figure out how to triple the income of our chosen villages (that is another story and a great life lesson!), and I had never been in a Consult. It came time to meet the strategic objective of finishing the task of putting a demonstration village in the remainder of the 25 Districts, which would require everyone to be on a Consult team. It felt like it must have been when all the cooks had to grab their rifle and head to the front lines in WW II! So off I went to a village called Narayan Chinchole. I was the first to arrive and Cyprian was to arrive to lead it. I knew nothing! I helped Jim Patterson in the pre-work, but as the day was approaching I was panicked as to who was going to lead this! So I rushed to the telegraph office and sent Joe a telegram that called for HELP! I was so naive that I thought he would get it, but it arrived two weeks later. It was a painful Consult and it was clear to me and just about everyone else that we were *way* over our heads in so many of the Consults done that week. I thought there was going to be a mutiny when all returned and the reports we made. General Joe just stood there, like Patton, and received it all. No apology, just “let’s keep moving”!
Now the “three Joe’s” are together, patiently waiting for the rest of the Blue Shirts to arrive so we can all walk into heaven together!
Thank you Joe!
Jack
