tracking down the "what appears to be a breaking down of civilization" quote
Colleagues: With apologies for inflicting a fishing exercise on everyone, can anyone reconnect me with this quote that concludes something like: 'may be a breaking in of new possibility by life itself.' That's not right, but something like that. Does we have a compilation of our great quotes anywhere? "What appears to be a breaking down of civilization may well be simply the breaking up of old forms by life itself." Ok, just for fun, I googled the entire quotation to see what would come up ('cause sometimes you just never know). The original source appeared at the top (an amazing article by Oates entitled, "A New Heaven and Earth," yes, referring to the D.H. Lawrence poem http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/Arts/Arts-idx?type=turn&entity=Arts.ArtsSocv10i1.p0039&id=Arts.ArtsSocv10i1&isize=text) and the next seven (7!!!!!!!) entries were to ICA materials! What a kick! Ken Sent from my iPad On Apr 26, 2013, at 9:27 AM, R Williams <rcwmbw@yahoo.com> wrote:

I think it's appropriate to talk of the breakdown of our present economic-industrial-globalized civilization. I wrote a paper on the Collapse of Civilizations for what it's worth and it's attached. I am working on conferences on Ecological Civilization and the Commonwealth of Life. I hope to involve ICA (EI?) in this effort and have just this week commenced a dialogue with Jack Gilles about this. We intended to enter into this conversation with others. I certainly intended to engage one David Dunn and one James Wiegle, among others, in this dialogue. Herman On Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 1:04 PM, James Wiegel <jfwiegel@yahoo.com> wrote:

You are quite right, Mary Laura. Here are the others we often used (along with the actual quote from JCO): . "At the edge of history the future is blowing wildly in our faces, sometimes brightening the air and sometimes blinding us." William Irwin Thompson . "The task before us now, if we would not perish, is to shake off our ancient prejudices, and to build the earth." Teilhard de Chardin . "We have arrived at an historical vantage point . . . where the wasteland ends and . . . human wholeness and fulfillment begins." Theodore Rosak . "Man anticipates more or less clearly his entire future at every moment." Jose Ortega y Gassett . "What appears to be a breaking down of civilization may well be simply the breaking up of old forms by life itself." I think it's appropriate to talk of the breakdown of our present economic-industrial-globalized civilization.

Colleagues:
With apologies for inflicting a fishing exercise on everyone, can anyone reconnect me with this quote that concludes something like:
'may be a breaking in of new possibility by life itself.'
That's not right, but something like that.
Does we have a compilation of our great quotes anywhere?
David

Diann, thanks for this. It's going into my Human Community Network file and, too, I'll forward it to my daughter Amy Wheeler, who's CEO of Hedgebrook (see at Hedgebrook.org) where Naomi is a member of her Advisory Council. It's a very moving story. Grace and peace, Jim Wheeler On Sat, Apr 27, 2013 at 2:37 PM, McCabe, Diann A <dm14@txstate.edu> wrote:

Yes, thank you, thank you, Diann. Wonderful! All is not lost indeed ... And Jim Wheeler - I don't know you but again am in awe of contacts through ICA. Hurray for Hedgebrook. I too am forwarding this - to peace, justice, sustainability colleagues from this NY region area. I love this poem too. After Naomi was in Appleton for our book festival a couple of years ago, I asked her to sign that poem for me and she said Gate A-4 would be mine from now on. I told her that this poem expresses the way I want life to be--always! Alice On 4/27/2013 2:37 PM, McCabe, Diann A wrote:

I think what you are asking for is the saying by Joyce Carol Oates (I think that's right): "The Future is blowing wildly in our face, sometimes brightening the air and sometimes blinding us."
