George and I are well. Our power was restored Saturday afternoon and one computer was up and running by yesterday morning. We mourn the deaths and loss of homes and businesses of thousands of our fellow New Yorkers. Most schools re-opened today - some even without heat. But 102 schools still remain closed because they have no power; they are too badly damaged; or they are serving as evacuation sites. Elections, tomorrow, will be a challenge, but alternate arrangements for polling sites are being set up. The challenge is getting the word out so that people can know where to go and, of course, to many, the elections have taken a back seat to basic survival needs. I heard from Sheila Maguire that she is ok, same with Tim and Rebecca. I've been in touch with Ann & George Ensinger who live in Fresh Meadows/Queens. Their power came back on Saturday. Before that they had a couple of lanterns and an emergency radio. When I talked with her last week they had seen no images of the storm damage. She said there are record low temperatures and a lot of people are still without power. They are now doing OK, yet a lot of people aren't. They are waiting a couple of more days for gas because there are long lines at the gas stations. She will send a message when she can. It has been quite a journey over the past week. Lynn , Nelson, and I are fine enduring our relatively minor hardships compared to many others. When I am asked where I live I reply, ³on the Hudson River². At the beginning of the week I would have had to reply, ³in the Hudson river.² The city and our office has been shut down. Many of my staff including my partner, have had to endure prolonged power outages, home damage, and isolation , that still persist at this point. Fortunately none of us has suffered any injuries. Everywhere I go I am struck by the randomness of who and what is sparred vs destroyed. The finest human bonding moments for me have been standing in the line with my gas can and visiting with my fellow survivors, endurers, and mutualists. We have seen many examples of intelligence, respect, and practical concern and action on the part of individuals and government officials from both parties in response to the crisis. Sandy has taught us to appreciate so much that we take for granted and on the other hand our capacity as human beings to make do and help one another. Thanks for thinking of us.
