On Saturday, August 23rd, we will gather to honor the life and legacy of Joanna Macy—teacher, friend, mentor, and visionary elder.
Joanna’s presence in this world was a rare and luminous gift. She brought together Buddhism, deep ecology, general systems theory, and her own courageous life experience to create a body of work that has touched countless lives. Through The Work That Reconnects, she invited us to face the great challenges of our time with open hearts, clear eyes, and a steadfast sense of belonging to the living Earth.
I first met Joanna over thirty years ago, when she was my graduate school professor. Over the decades that followed, we became friends and collaborators, teaching side by side in programs that reached people around the world. Joanna’s insight, humor, and fierce compassion have left an indelible mark on my life, and on the lives of all who knew her.
It is my honor to convene this gathering to remember Joanna not only for her extraordinary contributions, but for the way she lived—fully, bravely, and in deep connection with all beings.
Warmly,
Jonathan Gustin
