Though I didn't know him well, I came to greatly appreciate Bishop Yap and his profound practicality. His book, "Doing Theology in a Pluralistic World" (Nashville: Methodist Book House, 1990) could well be a primer for anyone concerned about living effectively in a world of diversity. He was a scholar as well as a practitioner and spent at least a year as a visiting professor at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas. I was honored to meet him in Malaysia and to publish a review of his book. His insights seem all the more relevant today, and his promotion of them will be missed. As others have noted, his contribution to our common mission was substantial, and he joins that "great cloud of witnesses" from whom we all draw sustenance.

Thanks, Dharma, for letting us know of his completed life.

Subject: [Dialogue] Death of Yap Kim Hao

Dear Colleagues,
Yap Kim Hao, the man who provided the Ecumenical Institute the umbrella for its activities in Malaysia in the 60s and 70s , died at the age of 88 in Singapore this morning. He became the first Asian bishop of the Methodist church in Malaysia and Singapore in 1968.Those of us who worked in Malaysia and Singapore in those years will know how important his support was to us. Thanks to him, we were able to use Rev Kjell Knutsen’s residence as the KL Religious House. He was a progressive thinker in a denomination stuck in the two-storey universe. He spent the last few decades of his retirement in Singapore where he worked with various groups such as the Inter Religious Organisation and those fighting for gay rights.
