I've assumed that the great creation stories of the world WERE the scientific world view at the time they were formulated and that science and religion only split around the time of Galileo.

Your desire to create a grand union of science and religion leaves me a little uneasy. Clearly it does not now exist. But there have been times when it did -- the Middle Ages, for example. The science was a two-story universe bridged by the hierarchy, both religious and feudal. People were able communicate the goodness of reality in that universe of discourse.
