cardinal point to the familiar east, west, north, and south designation.
The fifth direction is the <i><span style='font-style:italic'>wu fang, </span></i>the
Center. It is no accident that Chinese call themselves <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>Zhongguoren, </span></i>the people of the middle
