[Oe List ...] What do we know about Helene?

While I am safe and sound, many people in the Asheville and further west are isolated by roads cut off by landslides, bridges washed out, and downed communications networks that have interfered with first responders who can't get calls or reach residents.Major flooding in Waynesville, NC submerged a whole shopping center, including my favorite grocery store and restaurant, under 6 to 8 feet of water, as well as the major road leading there. That's just one example!According to North Carolina's Weather Authority, Asheville is cut off from the outside world except by air, along with several other communities in Western North Carolina. I-40 is closed in several locations in Haywood County, and it is closed in several places near Old Fort due to mudslides.Part of I-40 slid into the river in the Pigeon River gorge at the TN and NC state line, TDOT said. The Pigeon River is flooding to near-record levels along the interstate, prompting crews to close I-40 off throughout.
Much the same happened along I-26.Marshall

Talked to Marshall Jones yesterday and he was delighted to have water back on after two days. In Maggie Valley, NC.   Safe but rather isolated by bridges and washed out roads.  Tried to reach Rob Work,  but suspect from area news that lots of repair still going on.  Our son jono had seen on FB that Rob and family  safe.  Our former hometown of Galax in the mtns.  hit with flooding, washed out roads and fallen trees, but all we know of safe.

We are so grateful for man restorative efforts were already in place to be of immediate assistance.  And grateful for all those folks who worked helping to clear roads, and the experts who are restoring electricity, and so many groups working on plans to assist in other ways.  Lynda

Davidson, NC, north of Charlotte, checking in.  The Cock family is high and dry.

Lots of heavy rain and high winds, but our area seems to be ok.  Over 1 million people in Mecklenburg Co. without power, but we didn’t lose ours.   Davidson is the northern edge of Mecklenburg County which is predominately Charlotte.  With all the warnings, we had a bag packed In case of tree/roof  damage .  Asheville is about 3 hours west of us, but its mountains and creeks and rivers were greatly impacted.  Swannanoa, which was named in the news clips I saw,  is where Rob Work lives.   Marshall Jones may be in Maggie Valley, near Asheville in those same mountains.  Our college grandchildren near Raleigh and Burlington checked in ok.  Heard from Mary Lou Vergara near Raleigh who was checking in on us.

Grateful for the many warnings sent out prior to the storm that reminded us to be prepared for this.   Thankful for the service workers in place throughout the south and coming from the north to help with downed lines, etc.

Thanks, Bill and Mary Lou, for checking on us.

We’re about 3 miles from the beach but high enough above sea level that the storm surge didn’t get to us. So we’re safe and no property damage. The barrier islands west of us, as in Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach, are devastated and inaccessible.
