[Oe List ...] Tillich and . . .

Jim, we bumped into the pastor of the “church across the street“ from
Joe’s, while we were in Dallas in the early 1990’s.  We had moved from NYC
to the Casa View neighborhood of Dallas, and went to a little church
unaware of any EI connection. On our first visit, there were pieces of
typing paper posted around the sanctuary with the names of people’s saints
on them, and one of them said JOSEPH WESLEY MATHEWS.   We were astonished
of course.  We came back to church & the pastor’s Sunday School class a few
times, and he would absolutely fill the blackboard in the way we used to
teach.  The pastor was Will Bailey, and he told us that Slicker used to
pastor the church across the street.  We were thrilled to find this church
and Will Bailey, but in the end we couldn’t handle the pure grief of the
congregation as they prepared to let Bailey retire after more than 40 years
there.  We backed away from it, with our 2 toddlers in tow.
