To the Rev. Dr. Epps

Dear brother John,

I was saddened by your announcement which sent me into reflection on your collegium. First, you honor another colleague who has moved on, identifying characteristics that you admire which reveal something about yourself. Then you tell us the news. You are preparing to let go of this life. That it has been a journey of 13 years, that you are grateful for the care of your doctors and your precious wife. You leave us with the unknown of what happens next. Then you give us two gifts, one an apology, and one a gratitude. Then you let us know that you will be reading this list serve but not posting.

Well, I was reminded of several things: that you are a brilliant thinker, writer and facilitator, as many others have written; that some of us got to see you on Zoom during the final session of the recent archives sojourn, and that you looked great and recommended your books which are on Lulu, which I intend to read, and hope many others will as well; that I had hoped to visit you and Ann when you were in KL; that I have had prostate cancer removed a few years ago, and wonder if it will return; that my precious Mary passed away 17 years ago from cancer; and many other feelings and thoughts.

With this collegium, you are giving your extended family yet other gifts: the gifts of awareness and grief and gratitude. We now are with you on your journey which has become ours. We are sorrowful saying goodbye. We are grateful that you are our brother among those who care. You have reminded us that each of us will unite with the endless, final mystery soon enough. You have challenged us to be conscious about what we are living for with each breath. Thank you, dear brother, for your kindness and generosity and courage.

Your living has changed my/our life. Now your dying is as well. And if you change your mind, and post again, I and others would be grateful.

May you, and Ann, and I, and all beings everywhere realize peace, happiness, compassion, and understanding.

Gordon Harper was always a role model for me, partly because of his humor, articulateness, and creativity. I especially appreciated his final posting which he termed a brief collegium. So here goes mine.

            Yesterday I was enrolled in a home hospice system. It represents the culmination of 13 years of treating prostate cancer which now has expanded beyond that. The very good doctors have done all they can and recommended that hospice care is next. Ann is taking very good care of me. No one knows or says whether there are days, weeks or months left, so I wanted to let you know and to say two things.

            1. First, I want to apologize for any and all offenses occasioned by my arrogance, naivete, and ignorance.

            2.More important, I want to express real gratitude for the privilege of being part of this body of colleagues. It’s like what an extended family would like to be but never quite makes it.  You are my extended family and I’m honored to be part of it.

I probably won’t be posting any more on this list serve but will continue reading it avidly.
