MOVIE

Introduction  1.  Themovie is also art.

          2.  The Church used drama from the first.

          3.  Look at movie with Christian glasses on.

Questions:  Order questions same as in"Guernica", but add theological interpretives:

          Samplequestions:

          1.  Impressionistic:

Scenes:(exterior, interior, with noise, music, settings ‑‑ different ways of asking thesame question‑‑not all need be used)

             Minorcharacters

Linesof dialogue  (Which have we left out?)

             Objects

             Symbols

          2.  Reflective:

             Symbolsfor you

             Whodid you like?  Hate?

Wheredid you see emotion on screen?

Feelemotions in yourself?  (anger, laughter, physical reactions)

Moodat the end of the movie?

Whoidentify with?            (Surprised atanyone's answer‑‑surprised at any if it had been different?)

(Whenapplicable --notice mood shift in the group? ‑ to make group conscious of itself)

          3.  Interpretive:

Whatwas the movie about, in a word?

Whatwas the main character's problem?  Did hedeal with his problem?

          4.  Theological:

Wherewould you point with a term like the Activity of God upon main man?

             Sin?

TheChrist Happening in the main character's life?

             ResurrectedLife?   (Free man?   Obedient man?)

Ifapplicable, one may note mood at end of movie with group's decision about whatactual situation was at end.

             Similaritieswith other stories?

Ifgroup seems ready,‑‑What is needed, as you look at the film theologically?

Conclusion:     Point out that the Christian symbolsilluminate the way life actually is and give us the tools to be self‑consciousto the human happening and to humanness, authentic and inauthentic.

Purpose: To provide the group the opportunity to groundtheir theological understanding in the concretions of the movie drama and, therefore, in their own lives.  Thepedagogue is not out to get the group to agree with his analysis, but to helpthem become clear on what reality in life, portrayed on this film, they wouldpoint to with the key theological symbols of the faith.  Their answers must be reflected back to themin such a way as to generalize again from the specifics used as illustration togive them self‑conscious clarity on what they mean.  The game, "Guess what I think the Christ‑eventis" must be  avoided.

I just got on the Archive site looking for this and could not find it.  I also searched for “RS-l manual with no success.

I want to share it with Quaker who is using a powerful movie artform and has no way to guide the discussion.

I can reproduce it out of my own head—already illustrated ORID for him. But I would be grateful if someone has the 1 page movie conversation” version.

Thanks!
