Good reply, Jim. I just forwarded this on to our boys. Good reminder of their history and places that we can look. Thank you for asking, Bud. Thank you to Len and Tim and others for that treasure house of wisdom at our fingertips.

Also a good reminder of all there is yet to do in cataloging our archives. Come join the Archive Team and be part of the continuing creation. Oct. 9-13 at the GreenRise Building (aka Kemper Building) at 4750 N. Sheridan, Chicago.

Yes, Bud, the strategy was to create a dramatic, tangible sign of renewed local community ( the parish) a la 5 th City in each time zone around the globe.

From wedgeblade.net<http://wedgeblade.net>: This was the most ambitious development project the Institute had ever undertaken. "Every Hour on the Hour" was the motivating image, dramatizing that symbolically there was a Human Development Project underway in every time zone of the planet.

This graphic of the original 24 communities was on the cover of the booklet published in 1976 that briefly described each of them. The second graphic is from the booklet and links this massive venture back to the Institute's pilot community development project in Fifth City, Chicago. The image is the statue of the Iron Man erected in that community to symbolize local people taking responsibility for their own destiny.

In the following years, over half the families of the Institute would spend one or more years living and working in one of these project communities, most of which were distressed villages in what we called the third world.

Does the Band of 24 refer to the work done in each of the time zones around the world?

Sarah -
Will check it out. Bayad is definitely one of the projects that we will highlight. The huge training program that is still going on there from Judith Hamge's time makes what is going on there relevant today.

Besides celebrating the Band of 24, we will be doing a research project four of the mornings. With so many alums here, we want to gather our insights into four of our basic understandings, ie.,

Fifth City - why we did it and how it worked (participatory methods). We will be telling stories of how it happened and how people were changed.

Imaginal Ed. - what it was and how we used our understanding of it to change people's lives. For instance, we knew symbol was key - so, in 5th City we worked with their deeply religious core to come up with Jeremiah whom God sent into the desert. Jeremiah who said, "but I can't live out there." ...and God who said, "But if you come back you will be an Iron Man." And so the symbol of the Iron Man reminded them every day that they could stand in the desert and not fall.

Corporateness - the structures that allowed the committed ones to be responsible for physical, financial and spiritual care for the body. (moving rooms very year - Kemper Bldg.)

Spirit Methods - purpose and how they continually reminded us of the profound, transparent and Other Worldliness that kept this world in perspective. (NRM - or as I say it now - the New Mode of the Religious.

We will be putting some of the activities and meetings on U Tube or some such thing so you can view them. I will try to alert you to things - and send you reports and such. I know you would be here if you could.

With love and respect,
Jean Long
