[Oe List ...] A new Singing thread

One of the best things about growing up in the church of Christ (non- instrumental) was learning to sing A Capella, with parts coming quite naturally.

So glad we've reclaimed the disciplined practice of the healing art of singing in our beloved community!

I discovered a new appreciation and appropriation for the alto register after joining a local Methodist church in Denver a few years ago after journeying through singing (or not) soprano, 'cracked bass' and tuneless monotone. It was there at service one morning I actually heard the different parts! Glory Be! Needless to say, my enjoyment of the many genres of music I enjoy have been gratefully intensified.

Here's to an easy, breezy corporate effort captured for posterity!

Hope we include some of the great corporate pieces of music that involved the body in Call & Response, Broadway show tunes, etc. I keep remembering of late, Bruce Bauknight's rendition of He'll Pilot Me and the rouser about I love Jesus 'cause His Name's So Sweet! (Might want to update the theological references).

Here's to a 2017 full of mellifluous melodies, harmonies and compositions with a great gathering in October and an optimum product duly advertised to be disseminated across the movemental realm of songs/music capturing the decades of our existence. Aside: Are we ready for some Doo Wops of the 60's? I have an extensive collection.

Yours in joyful anticipation por la musica,

Dawn

No Lynda, all the names listed as potential singers have not yet registered - but the list was a reminder and an invitation. Randy Williams - special invite - you were already mentioned - but couldn't do it without you.

Maybe Terry Wright, as he had done barbershop singing before we joined OE in1969. Terry died from cancer in 2005, just before his third grandchild was born.

Jean, Beautiful letter. Are these minstrel people all coming to the HDP event? Wow!

I thought of David Zahrt, Michael Shaw and some others who did Barber Shop singing. I believe John Treise was one of them. Can’t recall the 4th.

Jean Long here -
So thrilled that the thought of singing once again brings joy and anticipation to our hearts!!!

We are singing again here in Chicago - with harmony! One more reason for all of you to consider joining us in October (9 - 13) to help create the celebration of the Band of 24, the unveiling of the archives website and the creation of a list of tags (labels) that will allow people and organizations who would not use our jargon to reach the wealth of information we are putting on the web. We will have a roving minstrel band singing the songs of the 24 plus these others that memory is calling for us to sing again.

Additions to the minstrel crew - Pam Bergdall John Tresise, David Scott, Joyce Sloan, George and Carol Walters, Mary Warren Moffett, Ken Whitney, Carlos Ollison, Bob Booher. Forgive any omissions - tried to remember the Great Hall and the groups who were the "minstrels".

Well, now we have the choir for the internet and two groups of minstrels - and no rehearsals needed!

When else could you spend a week @$30/night (single) and $45/night (double) to ensure that our wisdom gets into history - and enjoy a mini reunion? We will have archive CDs (singing of the Order), documentary of the community on westside DVD), etc. for sale. Also books (History of Order, ICA, Courage to Lead II 0 Brian Stansfield) - and your books if you want to send us 10 copies.

...and we will be calling to catch up on your journies.

Our connection is forged in the commitment, blood, sweat and tears we were all driven to give to alleviate the suffering of the world - it is sacred and we are blessed to know each other in the sacrifice we shared - and have continued in dispersion.

the bond is unbroken,

Jean

A suggestion to make it more gender neutral, in the first column the third box change it to, "It's then I honor them, though they be foe or friend."

A challenge to do it virtually, but I think it’s doable. The challenge is having us online at the same time. Doodle poll, anyone?

Remember the Contemplation song? Here's the deal . . . We get 16 or more (or fewer) of us to video record ourselves singing the song, and then compile it and put it on the ICA Research Channel on YouTube. Who is in?

CONTEMPLATION

Tune: Those Were the Days

When in the midst of strife

The other strikes my life

And that encounter

Will not let me flee

It’s then I honor him

Though he be foe or friend

And I become the

All that is not me.

And in my past I find

The fatefulness of time

But then a transfor-

mation comes to me

I then begin my poem

In mystery alone

And I am Adam

In all History

And the Not-yet I see

Is cut from under me

So fast it comes as

Possibility

Then my reality

Is change externally

And I become the

All of yet to be

And deep within I see

The fact that I just be

And unrepeatably

This one this self

Free passion then I live

My depthless life I give

I find that I be

Being in myself.
