According to Gail Sheehy's book,Hillary's Choice, Don Jones took the high school youth group into Chicago to the south side House. In PBS Frontline's bio in late summer, a high school friend said that Rev. Jones took the group to hear an MLK speech in Chicago, and that she and Hillary went to the Democratic convention (68) where police got very violent with student protesters. HRC and her friend were just observers, not protesting.

So???  Don Jones must have taken courses from the Faith and Life Community (RS1 offered beginning in 1958 in Texas) and then created a version to teach to his youth of Park Ridge (don't know where Park Ridge is) in 1961. The EI call to Joe Matthews was in 1962 and move to West Side in 1963. Was Hillary at the EI either in Evanston or 5th City?   Does she have more experience with the Movement than the RS1 version Jones created?

I was happy to cast my Hillary vote last week.  Interesting to hear this fuller history -- I had heard parts of it -- the meeting of MLK, Jr. on Chicago's south side, etc.  She has always operated from a context larger than herself.  Glad to hear she had 'You are Accepted' among her resources.  That has helped all of us on the journey!

Somehow this sounds VERY familiar!

Fresh from seminary after a stint in the Navy, Jones gathered the sheltered Methodist youth of Park Ridge and gave them crash courses in the "University of Life." He read them poems by e.e. cummings, introduced them to Christian intellectuals such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Paul Tillich, and asked them to interpret modernist paintings such as Picasso's 'Guernica'."
Much later Tillich's sermon 'You Are Accepted' got Hillary through the Monica crisis.
Joe Thomas tells about meeting Hillary in Baton Rouge some years ago and discussing her experience at The Ecumenical Institute.
So GO VOTE already!
