Dear Leslie and Doug,

You may not remember me, but may remember our name as someone from your long-ago past. Your father, Vernon, and my first husband, Dick Kucera, were both musicians in Lincoln and our families knew each other. You may also remember my daughters, Karen Kucera Januto, and Kristin Kucera. My son, Kendall Kucera, died 3 years ago.

I am so sorry to learn of your mother’s health condition. I know she was part of the Institute of Cultural Affairs for a few years, as was I. I am currently living at Songaia Co-Housing Community in Bothell, WA and both Karen and Kris live in Seattle. I have not been back to Lincoln for several years - my 60 year high school reunion happens next year - 2017, and I hope to go back in September if my health holds out!

I’m sure your mother would not remember me in her current health situation, but I want you to know I am thinking about you and would love to hear from you about your and your brothers’ lives. Please write if that seems appropriate! I hope you are well.

In care,
Carol Crow

> Sad news indeed. Your pain is acknowledged and received with compassion. Neva and I go way back to the late 1960s in Lincoln, NB. We were a part of the Lincoln Metro Cadre and the Kansas City Region when Terry Wright and I were Regional coordinators. Neva worked as my church secretary at Trinity UCC. We lost touch through the years but she was a stalwart and a strong presence in everything we worked for, and I never forgot the many experiences we shared. I am sorry to hear of her difficulties in recent years and the burden this has placed on Leslie and Doug. There may be consolation in the words of Robert Adams, which he often repeated: “You are not the body. You are not the mind. There is only Love.” Neva’s spirit hopefully is shining through her current battles and will be acknowledged and received with compassion, for sure by the mystery, if not by all of us. Peace and Love, MM <>

She also has issues with rational thought and cannot do any numbers at all. I have been her medical and financial power of attorney until she hired a lawyer to remove me without my knowledge as she had done with my eldest brother. She is now a ward of the county and has been found to have pancreatic cancer. I do not get phone calls returned often so the information is sketchy. Doctors have not returned my phone call, but my brother Doug is on his way there for a consult where they will decide to have an invasive surgery or not. She is currently in a secured facility nursing home (she twice hit a resident at the unsecured facility so was moved). Her letters and phone calls are fairly incomprehensible. My brother and I talk it through to see what she might be talking about. I have been holding off posting this thinking that I would have a better picture of prognosis since I have been told it's dormant, but since they are talking about invasive surgery I don't know." -- from Leslie Forbes
