[Oe List ...] art form conversation - election day "Where and how did your body react?"

I have held onto this for a long time (having found it some way long ago and used it in class discussions when necessary). I shared it earlier today with 2 colleagues who worried aloud how to deal with their classes today. One wrote, “I love this.”

Thanks for sending it again—Diann

Jo Nelson has shared this several times in different venues. Might be a helpful start in creating the conversation.

DEBRIEFING A TRAUMATIC SITUATION
A Focused Conversation

Situation: A traumatic incident has just happened. The immediate incident is over, but people are shaken and need to talk about what has happened.

Rational Aim:
To talk about their personal experiences of the trauma.
To face reality and begin to deal with it productively.

Experiential Aim:
To move from shock to beginning to come to terms with the situation.

Opening: This event has shaken all of us. Let¹s take a little time to reflect on what¹s happened, so we can come to terms with it. I¹m going to ask some questions that will help us gradually process what happened. I would like you to let everyone have their own answers ‹ no interrupting, arguing, or judging what anyone says.

Objective Questions
> Imagine you were a video camera recording what you saw happening on that day. What actions, words, phrases, objects, and scenes are recorded on your tape? Let¹s get everything out so we all have a full picture of what happened.
> What has happened since?

Reflective Questions
> What shocked you?
> What was most frightening?
> What made you want to escape?
> How else did you find yourself reacting?
> Any place you wanted to cheer?

Interpretive Questions
> Why do you think this happened?
> What might have been some other contributing factors?
> What impact does it have on you?
> How are you different now?
> How might we be different a year from now?
> What can we learn from this?

Decisional Questions
> What can we do to prevent this from happening again?
> Who else do you need to see or talk with?
> What can we do to help each other now?
> What can we do to symbolize how we changed or what we have learned?

Closing
We will undoubtedly continue to reflect on this. If you need help, please be sure to ask for it.

Hints
Some of these questions are difficult to answer, so if there are few spoken answers, don¹t worry. The very fact of raising these questions and following this flow allows deeper reflection later. It may be helpful to print out the questions for participants to take with them for solitary, small group, or family reflection.

It occurred to me that it might be useful to others, both for personal and client situations. This is adapted from page 155 of "The Art of Focused Conversation for Schools". You will have to adapt it for the current situation.

Like taking a deep breath reading this, John. Thank you—and, yes, now what? Grieve/process for a day or two and then . . . Tbd

I keep a cartoon on my desk depicting a cat with its tail in its mouth. The cat is reading a book entitled "You've Caught Your Tail: Now What?"

That's a perfect question for Republicans, whether primarily Trump supporters or Clinton haters.

It's also a good question for Democrats, whether primarily Clinton supporters or Trump haters.

There seems to be enough hatred and fear of the Other to go around. As the sensitive and responsive Ones, our job is to "increase the love of God and Neighbor" to quote H.R, Niebuhr. Recalling this is helping me deal with the regrets about yesterday and trying to avoid finding fault and placing blame. The Mystery has struck again! Now what?

Jann, David et al,
I would like to respond to Jann’s proposed question. I’d be interested in any other person’s experience.

Here’s mine.
When I went to bed some time before midnight, yet knowing that Trump had won, I was in shock, unable to sleep and experiencing great bodily stress. Might I have a heart attack? (I have never had any heart problems.) Part of this was a deep sense of helplessness, being infinitely puny in the face of this new reality of America and the world. To self-soothe, I moved into my current meditative/contemplative practice of, on the one hand listening to whatever words my ego was muttering to get a sense of where I was at in this world; and on the other hand, attentively breathing – ‘we’ on the in-breath and ‘us’ on the out breath evoking the eternality of the other world.
Soon I moved into sleep.
Upon waking, I was aware of being in a cool, vibrantly alive state of being aware that I had been delivered into a completely new self-awareness of my world.
Well I know that my ego and one’s collective ego can produce wonderful illusions!
Calmly, I embrace this new reality symbolized by the Trump presidency. I am committed to finding whole new ways of engaging with this disenfranchised cohort, as I am committed to engaging with the marginalized anywhere.

Here’s a version of the Lord’s Prayer written by Joyce Marshall that I try to read daily.
O Holy One, we look to you that you may find us and shine your light on our soul.
Fill us with your holy spirit of love and truth.
May we trust in the absolute goodness of what is and not fight it.
We ask for your spirit and we open ourselves to receive it this moment.
Forgive us as we forgive all claims that we have imagined are our due.
May we renounce our ego and live ever aware of our dependence on you to keep us free.
Ken

Subject: [Oe List ...] art form conversation - election day

Hi everyone,

I teach a Leadership Studies class at a Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design - traditional age students getting their degree in fine arts.

I'm thinking tomorrow's class will be an art form conversation on their experience of Tuesday.

I'd be very interested in this groups wisdom and suggestions for questions and format.

I have introduced them to the ORID method and facilitated conversations is already an established norm.

What do you think?

Grace and Peace,

David Flowers
