I love remembering TM76! Nelson's essay took me back in time. I worked on the Town Meetings in Houston (the Clarks were Priors, and it's where I got to know Sherwood and others there between '74 and '76).
I coordinated one of the first bilingual (English and Spanish) TM76 precursors or test cases in what we called at that time a "Chicano" neighborhood. I think this was in early '75 (maybe even '74)when the program was just getting off the ground. I stumbled through creating my own translation of sorts of what was still just a typed copy (and only in English) of the manuals-none of the fancy dancy stuff that came later all slick and in color. Afterward, some of the grandparents, caught for years in the eddy of not speaking English, came to me and said in Spanish, often with tears in their eyes, "I never could talk to my grandchildren-today we listened to each other." And teens, all-the-way assimilated into American culture and disdaining to learn Spanish, came to me and said in English things like, "Wow-I never knew my grandparents could have good ideas!" or, "I just learned today how smart my grandma is!"
Then I coordinated the White Oak TM76 (sometime in early '76 I think) in my own neighborhood (Inwood Forest area). We had 200 or more people there, including Don Clark and some of the Houston Religious House and a few from the Cadre. And by then we had the slick Town Meeting 76 manual all in vibrant color-I was so proud of the ICA that day! There were two adjacent neighborhoods that never got along but participated together (we had to choose a non-existent name both groups could live with, hence White Oak (which apparently had some historical significance that allowed both neighborhoods "ownership"). We held it in a local school, and we filled the placed up. A local network TV sportscaster (who later went on to more fame) was our MC and we snagged a few local political celebrities etc. Then, after the all-day TM76 we held weekly meetings for a while to tinker with and implement our action plans. Somewhere in there we moved to Denver, and I've always wondered what became of the two neighborhoods learning to be friendly with each other.

Nelson Stover shared this message with us today, which was also sent to the Archives. I thought many of you would also appreciate this recall of Town Meeting days.
