Father & Son Tell Different Tales in Revolutionary 1960sAt several points
during the 20-year germination of IRON BOY, I considered telling the tale
in rotating voices between myself as a child and my father (Gene Marshall)
as the adult who had chosen to bring us into “The Order: Ecumenical.”
However, both my editor and literary agent dissuaded me from doing so,
saying that my own story would ring true to the reader, but that I could
not effectively speak my father’s words. I approached Dad with the
possibility of doing this parallel version, but he said he was too busy
writing his theology books to collaborate on this project with me.

Then last year, we both published our memoirs, mine about just twelve years
of my early life, and his about his whole life, but parts track each other
in time and place: 1960s in Chicago. So here is my edited rendition of the
early chapters of that parallel father-son story. Uncanny how two people
can live side by side and tell such different tales.

I’ll start with how we both experienced “The Order” at first blush in 1962
and 1963. If you are interested in reading more about this parallel
father-son universe, let me know in the comments section, and I’ll add
another chapter or two on Substack.
