Dear former OE/EI/ICA Colleagues - I recently published my memoir, IRON BOY, covering the twelve years from 1962 until I turned eighteen in 1974 when I lived in a family religious order. The initial manuscript was an unwieldy 420 pages, so my literary agent and editor helped me whittle it down to 270 pages. Most of the pages of IRON BOY cover those harrowing first few years in Chicago, before I was sent forth into the world at twelve. Now that the book is published, and readers are asking for more about my “Youth Deployment” years, I decided to share some of these forgotten, cutting-room-floor chapters with you on Substack for free. Here are some scenes from one of the most intense, mind-blowing thirty days of my life in the summer of 1972. Had it been included in IRON BOY, it would have appeared between the chapters The Academy and Seventeen. For me, this summer marked the true birth of the ICA.-David Marshall
