Thanks Jonathan. Wonderful to hear this history (I was there too at the time) and also to hear about the upcoming vote. I hope it prevails.

Thank you Jeanette - you were there! The version Michael sent is the song version which was based on the longer poem which I believe is the one you typed. I seem to recall that it was printed up and sent as a Christmas lettering 1969 to all the colleagues of the Movement int Australia.
There is a remarkable synchronicity here as a couple of weeks ago I was in Darwin for anniversary celebrations for Nungalinya College (50 years - Jubilee), the 150th anniversary of the Darwin Wesleyan (now Uniting) church and the 100th anniversary of what was Milingimbi Methodist Mission. Rev Tony Goodluck who is the Moderator of the Northern Synod of the Uniting Church shared memories of his childhood when his parents were missionaries for the Methodist Church. He concluded his presentation by singing “Run into the Future Run” which was so apt as on 14th October the Australian people will vote to change the nation’s constitution to include recognition of the First Nations and to have a VOICE to the Parliament. While this invitation (known as the Uluru Statement From the Heart) is to all Australians and comes after a rigorous process of consultation among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders it is no means certain it will pass. Unfortunately we are witnessing the lifting of the lid of a deep vein of racism particularly among older Australians. Perhaps you can remember this upcoming in your prayers!
It was Tony’s father, Rev Jack Goodluck (still alive) who arranged for three significant First Nation’s men to attend the ITI in Singapore. All three (now deceased) went on to be great leaders of their people particularly among the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land. Jack also arranged and opened the door for Kay Hayes (as she was then) and Russell Campbell to collaborate with Indigenous leaders with the purpose of building a new kind of Christian Eduction curriculum those still living the “traditional way’. I believe the other songs from that time (inspired by Kaye and Russell treks) are still being sung e.g. Journey On.

Joseph Mathews worked with the Aboriginal elders from Australia at the Singapore ITI in 1969 to create this song. These elders were a powerful mostly silent presence throughout the first two weeks of the ITI.
Work on the song with these elders was a very significant event at the ITI in which a new story for Aboriginal people in Australia for the future was being articulated. Joseph was so delighted working with the elders edit after edit to get the story just right.
I know because I was re-typing draft after draft (no computers about) andJoe was dancing around back and forth between the elders and the office.
A fond memory of that time.

This song (copied below) has been running through my mind for several days. The catchy tune makes it a kind of earwig. I’m wondering if anybody knows the backstory on the words, the tune, and most importantly, the context in which it was created.
