[Dialogue] Fwd: Song has been cycling in my imagination, remember it?

Pat Druckenmiller here:
This is a bit of a puzzlement. There are a lot of references, including to a German folksong. The name is both a person (German who won a decisive battle 1700s or so) and a ship, I think WWII. And it seems a lot of composers wrote things with this name or versions of it. I got a Wikipedia version of the folksong, and good luck trying to sing these words to it!
For some reason, I think it’s a Gilbert and Sullivan tune. Nothing on which to base that, but maybe someone can try.

Jean Long here -
Don't recognize the second link to a tune. Can't open the first link you sent - says an error was caused during the validation.??

This is an orchestra playing Prinz Eugen. Is this the tune? I just "googled" it.

And how can we hear the tune if we don’t remember it? Who would be so bold as to sing it for us on some audio technology? I recall that it is almost operatic and fast paced, but can’t get the tune. Lynda C.

To whom can we attribute these wonderful lyrics?

CITIZEN’S SONG
Tune: Prinz Eugen

Whether given high position
Born to rank or the condition
Of the poorest of the poor
Whether wearing clothes of fashion
Or old rags you couldn't cash in
These things, these things don't endure.

If we work hard, gain high placement
Or for years toil in the basement
Or we have no work that's sure
Even if we turn out lazy
Damned by all the world as crazy
These things, these things don't endure.

Whether gladly into battle
We march forth, or more like cattle
We are driven to the war
Even if we think we're victim
If the outcome is we've licked 'em
These things, these things don't endure.

But if we build new tomorrows
Gladly taking on the sorrows
Which accompany the cure
Or if all we do is chatter
'Bout ideals that just don't matter
These things, these things do endure.

Whether we are implementers
Social pioneers, inventors
Future vision to ensure
Or if we take the position
That it is another's mission
These things, these things do endure.

If we dare act out our passion
For those left out and to fashion
Ways their gifts can be assured
Or if like a sheltered flower
Frightened in a hole we cower
These things, these things do endure.

Therefore colleagues in our caring
Launch the journey with your daring
With your hearts and spirits pure
Join your hands with one another
Every human's now your brother
These things, these things will endure.
