I have known Joe Slicker since I was a child. My earliest are as Joanne
and John's dad (Bill was a lot older so I did not hang out with him.

India is where our relationship changed and changed me. I was one of Joe's
team. A story I have told many times in leadership programs since . My
first or second regional gathering I was supposed to select a village for a
consult before arriving. I failed so when I showed up at the meeting Joe
told me to turn around and not return until I was done. I was embarrassed,
angry and felt cut off from serious collegiality, dialogue as well as fun
and friends. I returned complete and from that moment determined I would
try never to show up unless I completed my tasks. India was trsnsformative
for and Joe was a big party that.

When I left India in 1980 I was tired and planning to return to Chicago and
talk Evelyn Kurihara into marrying me.

I arrived in Chicago Joe was in the lobby Larry I need you to come to Kenya
and live in a village. I said no. Then I called Evelyn in Nigeria she
said her plan was to go to Kenya. I asked if she had talked to Joe. She
said no . I knew the universe was aligning with Joe's plan . This seemed
to happen a lot.

Joe was my mentor and to this day here his voice saying my, my ,my.

He will be missed. He was a great strategist. Always trying for the
breakthrough assuming even if we failed transformation had better chance
