Ms. Carter was such an enthusiastic educator and a wonderful role model for me throughout my life. In May, 2010, George, Jordan and I went to 5th City to visit the 5th City PreSchooling Institute and Ruth Carter. Ruth, although retired, was as energetic as ever and we had a wonderful time reminiscing about the days we spent together in 5th City and the current struggles of maintaining quality services in communities - be it on the Westside of Chicago or New York City. We posed for pictures at the Iron Man statue and she was so proud to introduce us to her grandson. Ruth has a special place in my heart and I was so blessed to have known her.

Subject: [Dialogue] Ruth Carter -- Iron Woman
Ruth and I were tied at the hip for the 3 years in the late60's when I was the director of the 5th City Preschool and she was my right andleft hand. She and I climbed many mountains together -- attending a nationalpreschool workshop because the curriculum received a National 1st place award fromthe Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), receiving teaching machines from IBMfor the 4 year olds which got our picture in the newspaper because of theaudacity of believing machines could teach, making really cool uniforms for allthe teachers, designing the new preschool building on 5th Avenue with SheldonHill --- the list goes on and on. Yet therewere also many valleys where Ruth never flinched, never complained. She stoodfirm in her belief that the 5th City Preschool was a demonstration to the worldof the importance of providing allchildren from 4 months on up with a positive self-image.
In turn, Ruth Carter, became my mentor, my symbol, of the Iron Woman standing in the desert with armsout stretched knowing that the desert could become the promised land. And it did becauseshe lived --- and still does in the lives of all she touched.
