[Dialogue] The key question . . .

Yes, David. If the key question that was behind the creation of RS-I was
"how do we transform the church, so that those who are the church (ie, the
sensitive and responsive ones) understand what it means to be mission?"
The original question stands: What is the key question for today? Is it
something like: "How do we motivate the sensitive and reponsive ones who
understand that the survival of the people of the earth and the earth itself
depends on our working together to make that survival possible?" I like
the idea of striving for a T-shirt phrase, like "Be one of those who dare to
live the future now.", as someone suggested.
Now I'm off to take a swim in my nephew's pool on this hot Denver
afternoon!

In the US there is a malaise that has spread across the land where the
average person feels helpless to make ant insignificant change. On the other
side are a small group of millionaires and corporations that are able to
control the agenda to protect their interest. In the midst of that we have two
groups emerge,The Tea Party has been very effective in moving their agenda
trough elective politics. The Occupy Movement has been less effective due
to the fact that they have not found an effective move their agenda bound
the physical limits of their encampments. Both appeal to those in economic
distress. But the Tea Party only leads them to vote against their own
self-interest for candidates who continue to vote on behalf of the 1%. The
Occupiers have never been able to move beyond the local and unify themselves as
board movement over the nation al geography.
What I am trying to point us toward is to create an event that do the the
kind of awakement that RS-1 did. Then we need some kind of training process
that can formulate a movement that can effect change on a broad horizon.
Sort of like the Tea Party without the narrow reduced context but like the
Occupiers that could appeal to a broad population base and appeal to the
economic pain they feel.
I have not thought beyond this conceptually. I do not know what the
content would be - whether is is religious or secular or a combination.

David,
It would be good if you could spell out what that might mean, considering
RS-1 was based on transparency of the Christian symbols, and, who do you
have in mind to build it, offer it and teach it? If we are going to entertain
questions we need to take seriously the answers. They need to point to
some door or action that those of us who are scattered can go through or help
open.
Peace,
Jack

Alright Jim, you seem to be serious about this question thing, so I'll
give you the question that I feel is THE question.
Given the stance that "History rides on the back of the religious" that we
embodied and lived..... "Who are the 'religious' today, where would you
look to find them, what are the marks that tell you so, and what might we
share (and how) with them so that they are empowered and connected?"

Thanks for this Forbes article, Steve. I observe myself and others
needing, and having the opportunity to, re-find our "calling". This happens
often as circumstances change - health, economic resources, people dying, new
friends, new ideas, communities/institutions dying,
communities/institutions showing signs of new life, etc. . And the more I am sensitive to the
nuances of my situation, the more I realize that there are open doors in even
the most restrictive situations (The Future Is Open) - so circumstances
are always changing, at least somewhat.
In Forbes, such a dollar oriented publication, this author uses the word
"calling" - that comes from a religious tradition - our human concept of who
God is * "calling" us to know-do-be something. She makes good points -
including taking the long view (what does the future require?). But
"following your dreams" doesn't quite cut it as a total substitute for using
what you have to serve the needs of the universe.
In this 50th year of EI/ICA, some of the questions to live with:
Considering what we were/are/might be, what is our calling? What are we called to
know/do/be? What are some of the important partnerships the future needs?

* Just back from a great week at Chautauqua with M-F talks by John Shelby
Spong. Thus the "human concept of God" as a foundation for approaching
the Bible, theology, the depth and openness of life.
